out with the nets and shag pile carpet

I was driving along the coast road between Clevedon and Portishead, no intention of owning a caravan,But the 4sale sign seduced me and half an hour later I was the proud owner. Out went the nets and pink shag-pile, a coat of paint covered all the beige flowered wallpaper and on when the kettle. It was the most magical place to escape to from London. To watch the changing tides and bird life was wonderful. I even had my own little patch of garden with shed and garden bench. Sadly the site was sold and it became a Mobile home park.

East Anglia sinkage

East Anglia sinkage! Millions of tons of sand and shingle dredged off our coastline are now causing the loss of our shoreline to a far greater extent than Global Warming induced sea rise or East Anglian sinkage. It is not so much that the seas are rising but that our beaches are being stripped and lowered, so allowing high tides to undermine our dunes and soft cliffs, only to provide more sand to move offshore for further exploitation and profit. W need a sustainable future rather than a short term gain ? The cut in marine defence funding, and the refusal to compensate those who lose their living or livelihood, is real short-term economic strategy. This malpractice is banned in Europe because of the erosion and damage to fish stocks it creates. But over 30% of that sand and gravel stripped from our seabed is exported there to make up for the deficiency!

Wales

One summer my mother and her bestfriend took us away(me,minnie and carlotta my sisters) to St.David a small isolated village on the coast of Wales (not my favourite place in the world) The weather,no surprise here, was windy rainy and stormy. They rented a caravan or mini home as some like to call them.We all barely fitted in with our huge suitcases that had all the nonsense London girls would bring, high heels and make-up just incase we found a club or some decent guys...we were hopeful. Our first night in this 'home' was like we were at sea being biffed and buffed about by wind and rain, good old English weather playing at its best! The next day we all drove to the center of town to find a surf shop,we all hurried in to try and get surfing lessons or anything to entertain us like the thrill of a new bikini or really just anything...we all pilled in,looking really out of place, when we all spot this really georgeous shop assistant, big eyes, curly hair, the surfer type,we named him puppy dog eyes.Puppy was in every conversation and secretly in all of our dreams! That was our first excitment for the day,the other was to try coastering,a rather new sport to us girls but it sounded a laugh. So we went along just the teenagers the parents left us to watch Bridget Jones and drink wine, crying on how much their life was so similar to Bridget's.Everything was fine untill we had to jump of this hig rock into the sea,i was too frightened to do it alone so i made Carlotta hold my hand and jump with me,that failed and in all my excitment i swung my hand back and punched Carlotta in the nose, wasnt a pretty sight, blood everywhere! Then as if that wasnt enough Minnie got caught under a really fat man,she nearly drowned!instead of drowning she lost her shoe! terrible experience all around. And after all that they made us swim about a mile in deadly seas which were hurtling us left and right! That was a day to remember! We came home to drunken mum's who didnt take us a jot seriously when we said we nearly died...that night it rained again...we went home early.

¨Two Cäravans´ by Marina Lewycha

Why did the story have to end like that, who else thinks the same, a bit of a disappointment after really enjoying an insightful journey into the transcient and procarious lives of visitors and illegal workers residing in the UK today. The caravan often being a place of salvation, for people from Poland,Portugal,Brazil, the Ukraine,Russia; parts of Africa, China, Bulgaria, and many more; offering them protection and a temporary home from their dreadfull working conditions and pay. An escape from their conveyor belt poultry posts in factories and the discerning, sweet smelling strawberry fields of corruption and gangsters; for the fake blonde lipstick side walks along desolate roads in Sheffield and not forgetting the warriors against capitalism, the ancestoral environmental keepers of justice protecting planet earth. I loved the descriptions of the caravans throughout and the image of the little round gren0painted caravan sitting in a massive beech tree. This was a picture of delight. But how could the book have ended any ideas?
